Winding down

My time in Washington is coming to an end. My last day at work is three weeks from tomorrow. It's weird to think I've been out here for a year. I never intended to stay this long, but I'm glad I did.

I was able to:
--enjoy the cherry blossoms
--run a long race
--come away with a lot of solid clips and experience
--form good friendships at work
--travel in the president's motorcade
--see a lot of famous and political faces
--travel to NYC almost 20 times
--run around the national Mall
--find a bar with hundreds of different beers and enjoy the taste of Framboise (delicious!)

And while I've been out here, there have been several life changes. I got engaged. I didn't see that coming (at least for another four years based on Ben's five-year plan). The day he proposed has been the best day of my life so far.

This year has been chaotic and dramatic. When I first came out here, I was low and lonely. Now, I'm busy, stressed and ultra excited. I've grown a little but I'm still a little immature.

More reflections to come...

What I dreamed about last night

It's that time of year. And all this talk -- by my friends -- about running races has me dreaming about running in one myself.

Last night I had a dream that I was supposed to run a marathon, but I woke up late and yelled at Ben for letting my sleep in. By the time I got to the race, it had already started. I was also unable to get my contacts to work, and I knew I wouldn't be able to run with out them. Basically, the dream ended with me driving away with my family. Defeated.

I ran only around 3.5 miles today on the treadmill. Not quite marathon training. It was a small victory, though. It's hard for this gal to run more than 20 minutes on treadmills. I usually get bored unless there's good TV to keep me entertained.

Philly, baby!

I spent Friday night at home in Washington for the first time in five or six weeks. But the rare Friday night here turned into a usual weekend away. Ben and I traveled to Philadelphia for a one-night trip.

We traveled for a couple of reasons.

First, why not? We're young and who knows if we'll ever live out here or get the chance again. We're addicted to seeing each other. Ben put in near all-nighters at work so he could free up the weekend. But I didn't really want to make the trip all the way to NYC. So we met in the middle. And last, Ben wants to visit every baseball stadium in the country.

We both were supposed to board buses at 5 a.m. (me) and 6 a.m. Saturday. My bus left an hour and a half late. I think it's because the driver didn't show up, and the company had to get a substitute. I'm not 100 percent certain. Greyhound Bus Company has such a laid back, "I don't give a shit" attitude about letting its customers know why trips are delayed. And the company isn't the least apologetic when its drivers get lost for an hour in Queens.

OK, enough for the paragraph-long venting episode.

We made it to Philadelphia and went to Reading Terminal for breakfast. Basically it's the biggest market I've ever seen and full of food stalls with fresh food, to-go food and sit-down dining. It also has flower shops and stores. It also has a beer garden inside. Cool, huh?

We then dropped our bags off at our hotel and made our way east toward the Liberty Bell (which Ben insisted on me seeing), Independence Hall (just the outside buildings) and more of the old town. We're big on the river, so we checked out the water. I saw my first submarine and a really old ship.

When you travel, there's kind of this rule about enjoying the food as much as the sights. We ate at Jim's -- where the best cheese steaks in town are sold. I ate my first, sans the cheese whiz. Ugh, I couldn't get over the idea of eating a cheese steak with the same kind of cheese I use to spread on crackers and celery when I was little. I went for the American cheese. South Street, where the restaurant (if you want to call it that) is located, is probably heaven to young ladies like me who don't mind shopping, especially when the price is right. It was like Uptown times 10, with way cooler shops, mainly independent stores and restaurants and the street was within walking distance of everything else. It felt urban, but reminded me of a small town, too.

The Phillies vs Astros game started around 4 p.m., so we took the subway just before 3. The game was alright. I don't mind baseball. At least, I'm liking it more than I used to. But I was tired and fell asleep on Ben's shoulder for an inning. He has the embarrassing photos. It's a roofless stadium, and I had never been to one of those before.

The weather cooperated all day. We had expected the rain -- part of a big East Coast storm -- to hit in the afternoon. But we were lucky. We rested at the hotel, went to a diner from the '70s and made it to the art museum where Rocky does his little victory dance, or whatever you want to call it. Ben and I ran up the stairs. He wanted to race, but it was no competition. I was too worried I'd fall on my face, so he made it to the top several seconds ahead of me.

Today we slept in. Ben needed it more than I did. He worked past 1 a.m. nearly every day this week and put in the time until about 4:30 a.m. Friday. Yikes! By this morning, the weather was awful. It rained hard and the wind picked up. We returned to the market for one last meal there and then went shopping before we had to go to the bus station.

In 30 hours, I fell in love with Philly. I'll post photos soon.

Oh, and my bus left 45 minutes late today, too. Can't rely on Greyhound for anything. Maybe next time I'll take the train.

Flight 93

I watched it yesterday. I had wanted to see it but was in no hurry when it first came out to go to a theater. I talked to the family of a victim who was killed on the flight, so I could only think about him and his parents, wife and children as I watched. I had a stomach ache the rest of the evening.

The big decision

We didn't take the plunge.

We've decided to rent instead of buy our first home. We arrived at this decision in the wee hours Sunday after a weekend packed with looking at houses. While we're not keen on putting money into a place that we'll never own, this is the right decision for us.

Why did we go this route?

We found two homes that we liked, but as Ben did the math and we talked to more people, we realized buying would be a bad choice. It's true that it's a buyer's market, but not for buyers who are uncertain who long they'll be in Minneapolis. And if we have to sell in a few years, we may come out behind.

So we're going to rent, and I feel at ease with this decision. Although Ben and I are very much "head" people, I tend to listen to my gut, too. And my gut told me "not yet."

We'll buy someday, but not yet. And that's just fine with us.

I check weather.com every day

It reached 80 today in Washington. In Minnesota? I just checked the temps, and it's 26 in St. Paul.

3-2-1

This Friday marks three months out until the big day. As everyone had promised, the time has flown. I'm ready, in that I can't wait to marry Ben. But I'm going to need the entire time to finish planning.

It's hard to believe, but my time in Washington is coming to an end soon. My last day on the job approaches in less than two months. As I've written about plenty before, I'm excited to move back to Minnesota. But my heart strings will pull a little. I love what I'm doing out here, and the scenery isn't all that bad, either.

In one day, there's an anniversary that bears a black mark on my mental calendar. It's one of those anniversaries you don't celebrate -- the anniversary of my dad's passing. I don't dread this day -- that's too strong of a word -- but I don't look forward to it. It'll be twelve years tomorrow, and this is probably the first year I haven't gotten sick over it ahead of time. I hope tomorrow will go well. I have a busy day ahead at work, and I'm scheduled to take a writing and editing test early in the morning to be considered for a job.

***Bonus news***
--Ben and I will be in Minnesota this weekend to house hunt. I've turned into a maniac, looking at listings when I get home for the evening and getting advice from all sorts of people. I also fall asleep to HGTV at night. Cool? I think so, too.
